Who is Andy Weir?
Andy Weir grew up reading classic science fiction such as the works of Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov. Weir first began writing science fiction in his 20s and published some of his work on his website for years. His short story entitled “The Egg” gained significant amount of attention and was later on adapted into a YouTube video and a one-act play. Weir is best known for his first published novel, “The Martian”. He wrote the book after extensive research concerning the planet Mars, the history of spaceflight and the basics of botany. He wanted his writing to be as scientifically accurate as possible. Before being sold for 99 cents and making the Kindle bestsellers list, his work was published as a free serial on his personal website. Weir was later approached by the Crown Publishing Group who bought the rights of his book. The print version debuted at #12 on The New York Times bestseller list and was called "the best pure sci-fi novel in years" by Journal. “The Martian” was later turned into a film starring Matt Damon and was released October 2, 2015.
