It all began in the summer when I was looking for a new show to watch on Netflix.  Considering that I'm often watching foreign movies, Netflix recommended me to watch a show called You're Beautiful.  After falling in love with Jang Keun Suk and Park Shin Hye it was downhill from there...

You're Beautiful is a story about a rock band that needs to add a 4th member to their group to round out their sound.  They've already auditioned and agreed to take on a young musician named Go Mi Nam - but then he ends up having surgery that goes wonky and can't show up on the established date.  The solution?  His twin sister will fill in for him instead.  Except nobody can know about it - not the fans and especially not the other band members.  What follows is a hilarious game of trying to hide the truth.

What made me fall in love with this drama was that primarily it made me burst out laughing during the first episode.  I was totally hooked on the story, and I loved the characters.  Then it made me cry - and I loved it even more.  Plus, great music.

As I kept watching more and more dramas, I found that they all have something in common - a certain "innocence."  What do I mean by this?  Well, in Korean dramas although there's a high level of tension you're lucky if the love interests kiss once or twice over the whole series.  This contrasts so heavily to the sex-laden shows of North America, like Game of Thrones and Sense8, or the violence-laden shows like the Walking Dead.  I like those kind of shows too, but I had forgotten that TV doesn't need to be laden with sex and violence to be good.

Since then I've discovered many dramas that I love.  My top favourites are:

Secret Garden

Marry Me, Mary (also known as Mary Stayed Out All Night)

Love Rain

Hwang Jin Yi

If you're looking for a place to watch Korean dramas and discover more, then I discovered a website called Drama Fever.  Think of it like a Netflix for Korean, Japanese, and Chinese dramas.  So far I've been working my way slowly through but they have hundreds of shows so it'll take me a while!  I look forward to discovering more dramas going forward.

I am a Sci-Fi writer. I love drinking whiskey, hanging out with my 2 cats, and kickboxing. Check out Children of RIVA if you're interested in my work. Oh, and in my spare time I work ... Show More
