Ender’s Game is a novel by Orson Scott Card that was first published in 1985. It was originally written as a short story, which was later expanded into a full novel in order to properly introduce Ender’s character. Orson Scott Card already had imagined a series of books that examines our own motivations and humanity.

In the story, a future Earth is attacked by a group of aliens. The aliens are insectoid-like, and communicate telepathically with each other, and so there was no chance of communication between the aliens and humans. After they attacked the Earth, they mysteriously disappeared.

Humans then begin preparing for war with this species they call the “Buggers.” Children are tested and sent to training schools where they learn how to fight and are put through increasingly complex tests. Ender is chosen as the youngest, and is determined to be the best there is.

I first read Ender’s Game back when I was a teenager myself. I loved the novel, since it challenged me to think about my own prejudices and preconceptions. Ender is a character that is engaging, charming, and likeable. I always found myself rooting for him, wanting him to succeed despite all the obstacles thrown in his way.

This is a great book for young adults as I think many of them can relate to the environment, which is a lot like a school with a heavy emphasis on sports. There is a surprise ending, however, that also challenges us to really re-examine ourselves and our motivations.

Ender’s Game was also made into a movie in 2013.
