Eating Vegan at Milos, One of the Best Greek Restaurants in North America

If you've ever heard of Milos, then you probably think of its famous seafood - more fresh fish than you can imagine, oysters, shellfish, calamari - on any given night when you go to this restaurant the waiter will spend about 10 minutes telling you all the specials they have on offer that night that aren't on the menu.

Because it's so well known for seafood, and because of the limited vegan options on the menu, I was a bit worried before going there.  I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy the experience.  I was there for a birthday dinner, however, so I didn't want to disrupt the table with my dietary choices.

The first thing I have to say is that the staff went above and beyond in terms of friendliness, making sure that I had everything I needed or wanted to be happy.

Normally the typical Greek Salad comes with feta cheese on it.  For our table, they accommodated me by putting the cheese on the side so that I could still enjoy the salad.

I also really enjoyed the bread.  They grilled the bread but it was still moist in the middle but had a great flavour where it was charred.  Dipping it into olive oil was great and naturally vegan.

They also brought out some grilled vegetables as appetizers for the table.  While the others were knocking back oysters, I was enjoying oyster mushrooms and grilled peppers.

For my main meal, they brought me a selection of grilled vegetables as well, but different ones than the ones I had during appetizers.  Although I asked them to bring me more of those mushrooms 'cause they were great.  And extra onions.

They also brought another plate of vegetables for the table to share - the others had gotten fish, so they got to eat some of these veggies to eat with their fish.

By the time we made it to dessert, I thought I was going to die I'd eaten so much (and I'd drunk a lot of great wine as well). I did manage to fit in some fruit and a little baklava.

For those non-vegans there was also Greek Yogourt with honey and beignets.

Overall I did really enjoy the experience.  It's still not my #1 choice of restaurant simply because of a lack of variety for vegans, but I am happy to go there when other people want to go.  I know that I can get some great food and great service.

I am a vegan, a kickboxer, and a writer.
