7 Tips for Starting a Successful Blog

Saskia Ghirotti By Saskia Ghirotti Published on October 19, 2016

There are countless articles on the internet about how to start a blog. The majority focus on the technical side of starting a blog, including web-hosting platforms, domain names, themes and available plugins. While this information is undoubtedly vital to starting a successful blog, the behind-the-scenes work is just as important.

With some basic planning you can guarantee that your blog will be successful, you’ll have a higher chance of sticking to blogging, and you’ll enjoy it!

Here are seven things that every new blogger should do before diving into the world of blogging.

1. Know why you want to blog

This may sound obvious, but it is extremely important that you know why you want to start a blog. Knowing why you want to blog will give you direction and help you identify what to include in your blog, how to structure your posts, how often to post, and how to interact with your audience.

Ask yourself the following questions to find out why you want to blog:

  • Is it for a personal reason?
  • Is it to make money?
  • Is it to get published?
  • Is it to share something you are passionate about and connect with other like-minded people?

2. Know what you are going to blog about

Before you start blogging, you need to know exactly what your blog will be about. Think of this as writing a pitch. You should be able to explain what your blog is about to someone in about two sentences.

Developing a clear topic for your blog will help direct the planning and development of your blog. Moreover, it will help your future audience understand exactly what your blog is about.

When settling on a topic, make sure that it does not have more than three subtopics. Keep it clean and comprehensible for everyone.

3. Do your research

To create a successful blog, you need to know what your competition is doing. So, do some research! Take the time to research what other blogs are out there on the same topic. Check what other bloggers are doing and take a look at where you’ll fit in. By doing your research, you can make sure that someone else isn’t already doing what you want to do.

To have a successful blog, you’ll need to make sure that your blog is unique in your subject area and that you are adding to the blogosphere. Make sure you don’t beat the same drum as everyone else!

4. Know who your audience is

Take the time to think about your audience. Who will your blog appeal to? Who will be interested in your blog? Why does your audience need your blog?

Knowing who your audience is will help you create interesting and attractive posts, it will help to develop the aesthetics of your blog and it will help direct your blog and keep it focused.

While you’re thinking about your audience, it’s important to remember that your audience may change over time. It’s ok if your audience changes or expands over the life of your blog. This is actually good, but you should always remember to think about your audience. Listen to them and write for them!

5. Plan your blog posts

Identify how you want to share the content of your blog. Written posts? Pictures? Videos?

Most blogs share their content through written posts, but there are many different ways to write your posts and it’s important to decide how you intend to structure your posts as early as possible. If you decide to do written posts (most people will choose this), you need to think about the length of your posts, their style, their perspective, and whether or not you’ll use images.

Experiment with some different posts and some different forms of writing. Through practice, you will find what works best for you, your blog and your topic.

While it’s not forbidden to use different post formats from time to time, it’s a good idea to stick to a general format so that your audience knows what to expect.

6. Know when and how often you will post

Create a posting schedule. This will help you post regularly, but it will also let your audience know when to expect a new post. Think of it as a regular podcast that releases a new episode on the same day each week.

7. Prepare for difficult times

It’s always a good idea to have a plan to combat any challenges that may arise. This can include anything from not posting for several weeks or months, to managing nasty comments, falling stats, and writer’s block.

Along the way, you will meet some, or all, of these challenges. Having a plan beforehand for how to handle these challenges can help you overcome them more easily and move on to better things.

By following these seven simple tips you can guarantee your blog will be successful and you will enjoy being a part of the blogging world.
