It’s no secret that women make, on average, less than men in the workplace. It’s a frustrating fact that has made headlines and men and women around the country are doing their best to change the statistic, but we still have a long way to go before we find ourselves in a truly equal workplace. Luckily, many companies are very female friendly and there are a few things jobseekers can look out for in order to determine whether their potential employer is one of them. If you are one of these jobseekers, or even a consumer interested only in buying fro female-friendly companies, the following list will help you make more informed decisions.
Maternity leave should be a given but the sad fact is that only 59% of companies offer it, which is perplexing in that the United States is the only developed country not to offer it at the federal level and maternity leave results in more women staying in the workforce. If you aren’t able to take time off to give birth without risking job loss, then your company is not at all female-friendly.
Not every company is going to have an equal ratio of men and women because it varies by industry, but if a company is dominated by men whereas the industry is not, then there may be a problem. If you’re a jobseeker, you may not be able to find out the exact makeup of the company, but a quick look at its leadership can tell you a lot about the company’s mix.
Their legal troubles
This one may be more appropriate for larger companies because they are at a higher risk of being sued (more employees = bigger risk), but a quick Google search of a company’s name and phrases such as “discrimination lawsuits” or “gender bias” may turn up some results. Because everything makes its way online now, even lawsuits that are not part of the public record may show up in a forum somewhere. It’s not, of course, a guarantee but a savvy sleuth will be able to determine whether, and how often, major complaints have arisen.
