Books have the power to take us on expeditions and exploits that can leave us breathless—but always ready for more. So, in search of our next escapade, we asked the Bookwitty community to share their favorite adventure books. Here are their top ten. Read them and embark on new adventures of your own, from Middle-earth to the Bay of Bengal.

The Lord of the Rings

Continuing the story begun in The Hobbit, here are all three parts of the epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, in one definitive edition.

Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power—the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring—the ring that rules them all—which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins...

Treasure Island

Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, Treasure Island is noted for its atmosphere, characters and action, and also as a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality—as seen in Long John Silver—unusual for children's literature. It is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels. The influence of Treasure Island on popular perceptions of pirates is enormous, including such elements as treasure maps marked with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen bearing parrots on their shoulders.

Undaunted Courage

In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson selected his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis, to lead a voyage up the Missouri River, across the forbidding Rockies, and—by way of the Snake and mighty Columbia—down to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis and his partner, Captain William Clark, endured incredible hardships and witnessed astounding sights. With great perseverance, they worked their way into an unexplored West and when they returned two years later, they had long since been given up for dead.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Huckleberry Finn had a tough life with his drunk father until an adventure with Tom Sawyer changed everything. But when Huck's dad comes back and kidnaps him, he must escape down the Mississippi River with runaway slave, Jim. They encounter trouble at every turn, from floods and gunfights to armed bandits and the long arm of the law. Through it all the friends stick together—but can Huck and Tom free Jim from slavery once and for all?

The Talisman

The iconic, “extraordinary” (The Washington Post) collaboration between #1 bestselling author Stephen King and Peter Straub—an epic thriller about a young boy’s quest to save his mother’s life.

Why had twelve-year-old Jack Sawyer’s mother frantically moved the two of them to the Alhambra, a fading ocean resort and shuttered amusement park in New Hampshire? Who or what is she running from? She is dying . . . and even young Jack knows she can’t outrun death. But only he can save her—for he has been chosen to search for a prize across an epic landscape of dangers and lies, a realm of innocents and monsters, where everything Jack loves is on the line.

The Famous Five Collection 1

Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog find excitement and adventure wherever they go in Enid Blyton's most popular series.

This 70th-anniversary edition features the classic editions of the first three Famous Five adventures in one volume: Five On A Treasure Island, Five Go Adventuring Again, and Five Run Away Together.

Life of Pi

After the tragic sinking of a cargo ship, a solitary lifeboat remains bobbing on the wild, blue Pacific. The only survivors from the wreck are a sixteen year-old boy named Pi, a hyena, a zebra (with a broken leg), a female orang-utan—and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. The scene is set for one of the most extraordinary and best-loved works of fiction in recent years. Life of Pi is now available in a deluxe pocket edition with leatherette cover.

His Dark Materials

Philip Pullman's trilogy is a masterpiece that transcends genre and appeals to readers of all ages. His heroine, Lyra, is an orphan living in a parallel universe in which science, theology, and magic are entwined. The epic story that takes us through the three novels is not only a spellbinding adventure featuring armored polar bears, magical devices, witches, and daemons, it is also an audacious and profound reimagining of Milton's Paradise Lost that has already inspired a number of serious books of literary criticism.

Last Bus to Wisdom

The final novel from a great American storyteller. Donal Cameron is being raised by his grandmother in the Montana Rockies, a landscape that gives full rein to an eleven-year-old’s imagination. But in the summer of 1951, Gram ships Donal off to her sister Kate in faraway Wisconsin. After one contretemps too many, Kate packs him back to Montana on the next Greyhound. But as it turns out, Donal isn’t traveling solo: Kate's husband Herman the German has decided to fly the coop with him. In the immortal American tradition, the pair light out for the territory together, meeting a classic Doigian ensemble of characters and having rollicking misadventures along the way.

The Call of the Wild

The Call of the Wild, considered by many to be London's greatest novel, is a gripping tale of a heroic dog that, thrust into the brutal life of the Alaska Gold Rush, ultimately faces a choice between living in man's world and returning to nature. Adventure and dog-story enthusiasts as well as students and devotees of American literature will find this classic work a thrilling, memorable reading experience.
