Margo's Book Club: Titles My Cat Recommends

My friend Caleb's been nice enough to pop by every day and take care of Margo while we're away. He's discovered her little habit of pulling books out of the bookcase and started the #MargoBookClub

Yesterday's title was 'Imperium' by Ryszard Kapuściński. Today Margo has selected 'Among The Russians' by Colin Thubron. It seems like Margo is quite the Russophile.

Although her emphasis appears to be on non-fiction for now, that could change. Stay tuned for her forthcoming beach reading recommendations.

Among The Russians

Among the Russians is a marvellous account of a solitary journey by car from St. Petersburg and the Baltic States south to Georgia and Armenia. A gifted writer and intrepid traveller, Thubron grapples with the complexities of Russian identity and relays his extraordinary journey in characteristically lyrical style. This is an enthralling and revealing account of the habits and idiosyncrasies of a fascinating nation along with a sharp and insightful social commentary of Russian life.

Imperium

"Imperium" is the story of an empire: the constellation of states that was submerged under a single identity for most of the twentieth century - the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. This is Kapuscinski's vivid, compelling and personal report on the life and death of the Soviet superpower, from the entrance of Soviet troops into his hometown in Poland in 1939, through his journey across desolate Siberia and the republics of Central Asia in the 1950s and 60s, to his wanderings over the vast Soviet lands - from Poland to the Pacific, the Arctic Circle to Afghanistan - in the years of the USSR's decline and final disintegration in 1991.
