This is a great programme illustrating the power of a cultural movement and how politics uses it for its own ends and then casts it aside. We can see how Yeats dreamed a vision of a new Ireland and used that to inspire a nation to grab its place in the world only to be cast aside by the body politic as they grabbed hold of power and locked Ireland into their narrow vision. I wonder what Ireland would have been had Yeats been more politically astute and had he the power to stand up to Dev. Would love to have seen the Gentry of the law attired in Egyptian style gowns and hats :)
