Philip Michael Ondaatje is a Sri Lankan-born Canadian poet, novelist, editor and filmmaker.
Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1943, he moved to England in 1954 then to Canada in 1962 where he attended the University of Toronto and received a Bachelor of Arts degree then he got his Master's degree from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario.
In 1971 he began teaching at York University in Toronto.
Michael Ondaatje is also an Officer of the Order of Canada, recognizing him as one of Canada's most renowned living authors and he edits the literary journal Brick.
He was awarded numerous prizes including the Governor General's Award, the Giller Prize, the Booker Prize, and the Prix Médicis étranger.
