Emmanuel Dongala is a Congolese chemist, short story writer, novelist and playwright. Born in 1941, his father was Congolese and his mother from the Central African Republic. He left the Congo during the 1997 civil war. He taught chemistry and literature at Bard College at Simon's Rock for many years and now lives between France and the United States. He writes in French, and his work is translated into a dozen languages. His 2002 novel, Johnny Chien Méchant, was adapted to film by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire with the title Johnny Mad Dog. His book of short stories, Jazz and Palm Wine, was published in English in 2017.
